Hospitality, 2024
Babu’s legacy in Zurich has been one of great brunch, friendly service and a homely interior made up of collected pieces. A come one, come all policy has meant that the locale has remained successful and relevant over a long period of time.
The concept of the interior was an amalgamation of these foundations as well as the context of the new location on the street level of the NZZ Headquarters.
NZZ moved from their beginnings on Schillerstrasse to Theaterstrasse in 1948 after having architect A.C. Müller renovate the corner house originally built in in 1894. The architect A.C. Müller divorced with the historicism and and Heimatstil commonly maintained in that area and opted for a clean Bauhaus style. His aim was to make the newspaper production a transparent and public spectacle: tall windows provided a view of the technical heart - the rotary presses.
The architectural epoch of this renovation in combination with the industrial aesthetic was a huge gust of wind pushing the aesthetic cues of the new Babu’s on Theaterstrasse. The whisper back to the materials and forms one might have seen in this era, with a contemporary shout pulling the interior concept into a timeless position amongst some of Zurich’s favourite gastronomic landscapes.
The concrete composite floors, the glas blocks and the industrial interpretation of the Babu’s colours combine these aesthetic prompts and are further strengthened by a collection of vintage furniture from that time period.
